Jeremy Lurgio is a freelance photojournalist and documentary photographer based in Missoula. His photography is driven by a passion for documenting people, places and stories.

A native of New Hampshire, Lurgio received his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He began his study of documentary photography at the Salt School for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine.

In 2001, Lurgio finished his master’s in journalism at the University of Montana School of Journalism. That year he was selected to attend the Eddie Adams Workshop in New York. He worked for four years as the photo editor and chief photographer at the Ravalli Republic newspaper in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley. During that time he won numerous awards for his photojournalism including a first place at the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, two first place awards with the Suburban Newspaper Association and many first place awards with the Montana Newspaper Association. Lurgio has also become an instructor with the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula. He assists in teaching a documentary workshop, teaches a photojournalism workshop during the school’s Summer Intensive program, and leads a week-long people photography class. When not on assignment or in the classroom, Lurgio is out hiking, biking, fishing and backcountry skiing in the wilds of Montana.

He has become a regular contributor to both the Big Sky Journal and Montana Magazine.
