UM journalism program ranks 7th in U.S.

High-quality student work in photo and print and superior efforts in broadcast moved UM’s J-School into 7th place in the Hearst Journalism Awards competition, up three places from last year and the only J-School in the Northwest to rank in the top ten. “I’m disappointed," teased J-School Dean Jerry Brown. "We should have gotten first."

J-School raises $7.25 million for new building

The new J-School Building (1) will be surrounded by Jeannette Rankin Hall (2), the Liberal Arts Building (3), the Social Sciences Building (4), and Natural Sciences (5), as seen in this concept design from Overland Partners of Bozeman.

Say goodbye to old facilities and borrowed classrooms scattered around campus. The J-School plans to construct a building with space for everyone. Faculty and students in radio, television, print, photo, the Kaimin and a new Native American Center will be united under one big beautiful roof.

Students turn numbers
into news

Students taking a computer-assisted reporting class used their CPUs for more than just word processing this spring. After accumulating records of campaign donations to state legislators, they set out to find donation trends. With help from databases and spreadsheets, they turned their raw numbers into research for stories and created a searchable database of campaign donations. Who said reporters can’t do math?
