UM J-School students found themselves thrilled by—and exhausted by the rigors of—the process of covering what turned out to be historic national and hotly contested local elections. Click on the links below for a multi-media look at how our students worked election night, preparing stories for print, broadcast and the Web.
Watch video segments produced in the run-up to the election by RTV students in John Twiggs’ television news magazine production. R-TV students travel far and wide to broadcast election night scenes from around the state.
Justin Woodburn spends the night with students assembling local and statewide Web results. See Eddie Haver’s video of the late night efforts to get those tallies to the Web.
Kayla Matzke captures the Kaimin newsroom mood as the night’s stories unfold. Will Freihofer wanders politico hangouts downtown, watching J-students watching reactions.
See and hear what Web site contributors Dan Doherty and Kayla Matzke experienced as returns rolled in.

Print student honors lift J-School to fourth in national Hearst Awards competition

Sophomore print student Roman Stubbs and recent J-School graduate Murphy Woodhouse placed 11th and 13th, respectively, in the Hearst Journalism Awards Program's feature writing competition. No other school among the 78 accredited journalism program entered in the contest had two students place so highly. As a result, UM sits in fourth place nationally.

Frank Smyth, the Washington Representative for the Committee to Protect Journalists, speaks to students about the dangers journalists face in countries where press freedoms are restricted. In his position at CPJ, Smyth advocates on the behalf of journalists who are arrested or imprisoned in the US. Smyth made a name for himself covering foreign affairs as a freelance journalist for The Economist, The New York Times, and other major news outlets.
