Online News staffers

Dan Doherty
Born in Virginia, Daniel lived in four states before graduating high school. After graduating he worked various jobs, attended various colleges, and lived in various places before coming to Montana for an internship in 2002. He was so smitten by the state’s natural beauty and its charming bars that he had to come back, and ultimately could not stay away.

Returning to the Treasure State in 2004, Daniel eventually moved to Missoula, where he worked for several years before starting work on his undergraduate degree in earnest.

A first-semester professional photojournalism student, Dan’s experiences in the fields of photography, web design, education and politics inform his efforts to make the J-School web site a more informative, friendly, and attractive place to browse. He anticipates graduation in May of 2010.

Will Freihofer
Will is a senior in print journalism from Lyme, N.H. This semester he is working on campus for the Montana Kaimin reporting outdoors and news stories.

Currently enrolled in Online News and Magazine Freelance Writing, Freihofer hopes to complete his course work in the J-School this spring before heading overseas for an internship of some sort.

The president of UM's men's lacrosse team, he has worked as a camp counselor and whitewater guide and instructor during his college summers. At present he is anxiously awaiting ski season.

Lucas Hamilton
Lucas is a senior double majoring in print journalism and political science. He is a second-term Senator in ASUM, President of the UM College Democrats, and a former Chair of the Montana Public Interest Research Group.

A Havre native, Lucas spent last summer interning with the Senate Committee on Finance in Washington, D.C.

Eddie Haver
Eddie is a senior majoring in broadcast journalism. He hopes his well-rounded academic experience will prepare him to face the ever-changing journalism industry. He is taking producing and directing classes in the Radio-Television department, and sharpening his writing skills by participating in Online News. Once he graduates, Eddie plans to intern for a production company to help make commercials or television shows.

Eddie is originally from the small town of Panora, Iowa, and is glad to be in Missoula and surrounded by mountains. He enjoys doing anything outdoors. Also, Eddie is a pet lover and owns 6 pets: two dogs, a cat, a fish, and two mice.

Kayla Matzke
Kayla is a senior majoring in print journalism. Kayla was lured to the University of Montana for the mountain air and the pristine trout streams near campus, but mostly for its longstanding tradition of producing prestigious journalists.

Kayla hails from the open prairies of central North Dakota. After spending the summer interning at a small weekly on the Fort Peck Reservation, in northeastern Montana, Kayla realized there’s excitement in covering local government and rural issues. Besides writing for the J-School’s Web site, Kayla is a news reporter for the Montana Kaimin.

When she isn’t occupied with schoolwork, reporting for the Kaimin or reading newspapers, Kayla enjoys fly fishing, biking and cooking. Once she takes flight from the J-School, Kayla plans to put her skills to use at a mid-sized daily or weekly publication in Alaska – or some other cold place that’s not overpopulated.

Justin Woodburn
Justin, a junior majoring in print journalism, grew up on his family’s farm and ranch outside of Geraldine, a tiny central Montana town. He has a younger brother, who is a junior in high school.

When not reporting, Justin enjoys weight lifting, watching sports, hunting, snowmobiling, and writing creative non-fiction.

After graduating he hopes to work for a news publication or magazine. His passion for journalism is fueled by the people he meets. Learning about their tribulations and triumphs helps fulfill his fundamental curiosity.
