What This Page Is About

Here is a list of links to sites on the web that offer more information regarding the law of communication, cases related to the press and also to databases where you can access published articles and papers on issues concerning the law of communication.

Please Note - The home pages listed below may move to different addresses from time to time; if you find a broken link or a new link, please let me know. Remember - your suggestions on including other sites are always welcome.

Cornell University's Legal Information Institute: This site offers information (syllabus and opinions in ASCI and WP format) on Supreme Court cases. There is a topics index which can be used to narrow down your search to cases related to the press, but you will need to know the name or the date on which the case was decided.

FindLaw: Not only Supreme Court opinions but a collection of sites for researching law.

The Montana State Law Library for state Supreme Court opinions and briefs since 1984, the Montana Code and other state legal information.

Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe Go in through the Mansfield Library. Excellent resource for cases, statutes and other legal materials, as well as articles about legal cases. Click on "L" and then on Lexis-Nexis Academic.

The First Amendment Center: This site provides links to publications and news groups that constantly report on cases and developments relevant to the First Amendment. Best site for current First Amendment news.

Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press: This excellent site offers news about current First Amendment cases and links to a number of publications, special reports and legislation relevant to news media across the country.

Student Press Law Center: "An advocate for student free-press rights. Information, advice and legal assistance at no charge to students and the educators who work with them."

Society of Professional Journalists: Plenty of info on current issues in which SPJ is involved.

National Freedom of Information Coalition: Located at the University of Missouri School of Journal, this center concentrates on Freedom of Information (FOIA) issues.

Medialaw.org: Not much here that's free, except for libel law backgrounders. Libel defense is a lucrative business and they're not about to give it away. Minimum charge for membership: two thousand smackeroos.

Electronic Frontiers Foundation: You can find links at this site to specific sites on issues such as privacy, free expression, access and public resources and also get information about new and developing media. It has an archive list of position papers and articles on various issues relevant to freedom of expression and censorship.

National Assn. of Broadcasters: Lots of links and resources related to the broadcasting industry.

RTNDA: (Radio and Television News Directors Assn). More info. on Freedom of Information issues.

Communication News: This site is the web page for the Womble Carlyle law firm (Washington D.C.) and provides access to material relating to communication, telecommunication, Internet and online services law.
