ELECTION LAW
LAW 595
2 credits

Professor Anthony Johnstone

Election law is the legal structure of the democratic process. This course studies that structure in four parts: the development of the individual right to vote; geographical and partisan boundaries in voting; campaign finance and reform efforts; and the procedure and substance of direct democracy. Throughout, the course emphasizes constitutional principles that both protect and constrain particular visions of democracy.

Readings include a casebook supplemented by recent federal and Montana cases. Students participate in the course through class discussion, short weekly comments on readings, and a final paper.
