The purpose of this course
is to introduce students to federal Indian law. The
course will focus on introducing students to the foundational
principles underlying modern federal Indian law and
provide a historical overview to the development of
federal Indian law. Students will evaluate treaties,
the General Allotment Act, the Indian Reorganization
Act , the Self-Determination Act and the Indian Civil
Rights Act as a means for determining the impact federal
policy has had on tribal sovereignty and governance.
The class is open to undergraduate, graduate, non-University
of Montana law students, attorneys (for CLE credit)
and interested community members. The course will culminate
with presentations from the graduate students in the
class. All students, including undergraduates, will
take a final examination. Students’ final
grades will be based on their participation, final
examination and presentations, as appropriate. |
