INDIAN HEALTH LAW
LAW 595
1 credit

Professor Rebecca Tsosie, Arizona State University Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law

This course has two main purposes. First, it will provide an understanding of how healthcare services are provided to tribal members who are eligible for care with the Indian Health Service, and examine the respective roles of the federal, tribal and state governments in the administration of healthcare to Native Americans. Second, the course will explore ethical issues in healthcare that can arise for Native American patients (American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian) because of cultural differences. The course will cover the fundamentals of the trust relationship between the United States and federally recognized tribes, examine the structure of healthcare services provided to tribal members, and introduce the fundamental principles of bioethics that inform the appropriate and culturally-competent delivery of healthcare services to tribal members.
