In general, to be admitted as a Montana resident you must have been domiciled in Montana for 12 consecutive months prior to the Law School's receipt of your application. If you are not a Montana resident as of the date of application, you may qualify for residency status if you will have been domiciled in Montana for 12 consecutive months immediately preceding registration and have taken sufficient steps showing intent to establish residency.
In general, once classified as a nonresident, you retain that status for the three years of law study. However, a change in circumstances may warrant a change in residency status.
To see if any of the exceptions are applicable to your circumstances, and to view our residency policy, please see: The Montana University System Board of Regents' policy (940.1). The Statutory authority can be found at: MCA 20-25-501(1)(d)(i).
