IT Department Technical Assistance
The IT Department has a very talented but very small IT staff. In order to provide the highest level of support to our students, faculty, and staff the IT Department is authorized only to provide certain services. We offer two levels of service, Basic Service and Limited Service, as described below. Please be aware of these when you request laptop support.
Law students are responsible for their own data backup and will be asked to verify that all data on their personal computers has been backed up before presenting them to the IT Staff for service. Please read Law Student’s Responsibility for Data Storage and Backup and follow the best practices outlined in that document.
If you have any questions, please contact James Cramer, (406) 243-5584.

General Service Limitations
The IT Department is not authorized to provide assistance beyond the services specified above. Asking staff to provide support which is not authorized violates law school policy.
The IT staff is not authorized to provide computer support services other than those listed above. The IT staff is not authorized to offer hardware repair. Currently there is no local Toshiba hardware warranty service in Missoula. Because a working computer is an important tool in law school, the IT staff will provide Toshiba hardware warranty service on M7 & M400/700 series Toshiba laptops for members of the class of 2011 and 2012 on a limited basis and subject to the demands on the time of IT staff. UMLS is not able to provide services in the event such services would require overtime by the IT staff. In the event a Toshiba hardware service becomes available locally, students will need to obtain warranty service from that local provider.
The IT staff is not experienced with Apple computers, nor are they authorized to work on them.
The IT staff is not authorized to assist with computer peripherals such as monitors, scanners, iPods, printers, PDAs, etc.
The IT staff is not authorized to assist any law student with more than one laptop computer nor with desktop computers. The IT staff absolutely cannot provide any service for computers owned friends or relatives of law students.
The IT staff offers assistance only with laptops running Windows 7 or Windows XP Professional or above. We cannot assist students running
Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home, Windows 7 Basic, Vista, XP Home Edition or XP Media Center Edition. Note that Home and Media editions of Windows 7, Vista and XP do not provide users the services needed to access UM network resources.
