The core mission of the Mansfield Center is to enhance mutual understanding between Americans and the peoples of Asia.  We pursue this mission through teaching, research and publication, conferences, lectures, seminars, international training, and the sponsorship of cultural events.  Our primary focus within the United States is Montana and the Rocky Mountain region, but our interests and partnerships extend from the campus of the University of Montana across the Pacific to all parts of Asia.

The Center honors the lives and legacy of Senator Mike Mansfield and his wife Maureen Hayes Mansfield who early on recognized the centrality of Asia to the United States and devoted their lives in public service to the mission that we continue in their names.  From an original interest in East and Northeast Asia, the Center in recent years has expanded its horizons to include South Asia and Central Asia as well.

The Mansfield Center is an academic unit of the University of Montana.  Its director reports to the President of the University.  The Center enjoys a special relationship with the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation in Washington, DC with which it collaborates programmatically and from which it receives major funding.
