DAC Minutes - July 12, 2017

  • Due to the realization that no one from DSS would be able to attend today’s meeting, I’ve tabled the discussion about a campus-wide slush fund until our August meeting.  Erin Guzik has agreed to attend that meeting.
  • We may have an abbreviated meeting because of that change – I was reserving a large chunk of time for that discussion.

Topics Discussed:

  • Letter from President Sterns re: Importance of Access at UM

    • Janet drafted a letter regarding access at UM.
    • President Dennison use to send out access memos at the start of each semester, DAC would like to make this a tradition again
    • Nikolaus had suggestion for improvement, Janet said that she would edit the document
    • Please send Janet any comments or suggestions you have regarding this document
  • Fall 2017 Campaigns for Access Awareness

    • AT is all around us and we all use some form of it every day-mostly unaware of it
      • Curb cuts, Automatic Doors,  Siri/Alexa, AudioBooks
    • Dragon Naturally Speaking for Faculty/Staff to easy their burden
      • Speech recognition
    • Sonocent
      • Note taking focus
      • UM has pilot program for the fall
      • Potentially useful for entire campus
    • AT wants to "Break the Barrier"
      • Ideas:
        • Workshops at the Library
        • SAIT Newsletter
        • Staff Senate
        • Faculty Senate
        • Janet will send email to faculty following Nicholas's announcement
        • Veteran's Center
    • UM Stories
      • Stories that highlight the progress UM is making with accessibility
        • Access Acolades to highlight instructors
      • Highlight what life might be like for a new student with a disabiity  at UM
  • Raising questions for the 'one slush fund' idea

    • IT pays for captioning
    • DSS pays for Interpreters/Braille/Captioning for students with disabilities
    • How can UM establish a fund to cover these expenses for that will not come directly from one department?
    • These items should be a resource for UM not a drain on resources.
    • Focus on making a clear plan on how the money is spent now
      • Report on where the money goes and when it's running out maybe other departments will step in to help.
