AT in UM labs
UM Policy (1310) requires that UM departments are responsible for ensuring that "all departmental computer labs provided for student use have assistive technologies not limited to but including accessible computer stations, screen reading software, and screen magnification" (2.3).
Read&Write Gold (RWG) - literacy software
Read&Write Gold (RWG) literacy software solutions help struggling readers and writers, students with learning disabilities, and English Language Learners access the support tools they need at school, work, or home. Read&Write Gold ensures every learner has the tools necessary to reach their potential, build confidence and independence, and succeed.
How to request
Download Read&Write Gold (NetID authentication required): PC & Mac download files
Jaws and MAGic availability
Jaws is the standard Windows-based screen reader supported on campus. VoiceOver is the standard Macintosh screen reader. MAGic is a screen magnification software offered by the manufacturers of Jaws - Freedom Scientific.
Campus labs should offer users the ability to use Jaws and MAGic through most stations.
Dragon Naturally Speaking
Dragon Naturally Speaking (DNS) is a speech recognition program that enables user to dictate document and email and control their computer with their voice. Because DNS works best in quiet areas, it is not available in all campus labs.
Read&Write Gold is available to all UM students and employees. You must use your UM NetID to access the download.
