Media

Media includes videos, audio recordings and sounds.  If an individual who is deaf or hard of hearing, the sound may be difficult or impossible to hear.  Captioning is needed in order to understand the information contained in sounds and dialgoue.  Captioning should be synchronized with the dialgoue, sound and video action.  For the same reasons, audio recordings should be accompanied by transcripts.

Open vs. closed captions

Open captions are always visible.  They are "burned on" the video file and cannot be turned off.  This may cause a distraction for other individuals.  Closed captions provide users the ability to turn them on and off.

Audio descriptions

For similiar reasons, non-spoken action that happens during a video is not accessible to individuals with visual difficulties.
