Geoff Freed & Bryan Gould

Cadet Captioning Tool

Bryan Gould and his colleague Geoff Freed at WGBH’s  National Center for Accessible Media provided a national webinar on CADET. Many thanks to Norm Coombs from  Equal Access to Software and Information (EASI) for sponsoring this webinar and providing links to Bryan and Geoff’s  recorded CADET presentation, along with  their slides.

According to  WGBH's website, "CADET is free, downloadable caption-authoring software that enables anyone to produce high-quality caption files that are compatible with any media player that supports the display of captions. CADET can also be used to generate audio-description scripts. CADET does not require an internet connection in order to operate: it runs locally in any Web browser, so users do not need to upload private videos or proprietary content to servers or video-hosting sites in order to create captions."

You can download CADET at  WGBH’s Installing CADET website. At the conclusion of their webinar, Bryan and Geoff mention that the downloadable version of CADET as of October 19th provided the captioning software and that the software for audio descriptions would be available within the next two weeks so this update should be available soon. You can join the  CADET user group to stay current with their updates, get assistance from other members of the group, and report bugs.

CADET is a wonderful breakthrough for all of us working to provide accessible videos that meet  DCMP guidelines for captioning and the  DCMP guidelines for describing. Bryan Gould is one of our previous Montana Interest Group presenters, so if you should have questions you’d like to ask Bryan, please feel free to post them to this list so we can compile and send our questions to him.
