Human Resource Services assists all University offices and departments in the following personnel-related areas: staff recruitment and selection, new employee orientation, job evaluation and classification, employee job performance counseling and disciplinary actions, salary administration, staff training and professional development, personnel record keeping, staff collective bargaining, grievance resolution, benefits counseling, personnel and payroll administration.

Labor Relations: Human Resources administers a comprehensive labor and employee relations program for staff covered by 10 collective bargaining agreements, covering approximately 1,000+ employees. Labor relation activities include representing The University of Montana in collective bargaining, acting as mediator in labor disputes, ensuring compliance in labor disputes, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements and labor law, and resolving informal and formal grievances.

Salary and Benefits Administration: The HRS Office monitors salary equity for administrative and classified staff and ensures adherence to University, State, and Montana University System salary-related policies and guidelines, along with Federal and State wage and hour laws. The office administers a comprehensive benefits program that includes medical, life, and long-term disability insurance, paid and unpaid leaves, retirement, and workers' compensation premium calculations, payments, and fees.

Employment: Human Resources administers a recruitment and selection program for staff positions; promotes equal employment and affirmative action principles; conducts orientation programs for new staff, faculty, and administrators; and completes the "exit" process for individuals retiring or terminating University employment.<

Payroll: The office processes all aspects of payroll administration for staff, faculty, contract professionals, contract administrators, and student employees. Inherent in this process is adherence to Federal, State, and Montana University System guidelines governing taxes, other withholdings, and wages.

Staff Professional Development: Human Resources develops and implements annual comprehensive professional development programs to include workshops for supervisors, non-supervisory staff, and executive officers.
