Tunnel of Oppression- 407 people went through the 2009 Tunnel of Oppression. ADSUM received about 15 volunteer sign-ups who want to be contacted to possibly be a part of the club. Special Thanks to Eric Rasmussen, Randiea, Ashli, Megan, Faith, Justyn and the UC staff for the completion of the exhibit on the ADSUM tunnel.
New ADSUM Computer has been ordered and is on its way!
We have a new computer through the UM bookstore and will be here in two weeks.
SAIT computer system coverage is now up and running on our old computer. We have dropped First Call.
Student Affairs from IT Central has been donated to us. The IT techs have altered to computer so now we need to enter a code to gain access.
Letters to the Editor: Dan Burke wrote an editorial in the kaimin crushing the tunnel of oppression because it was not sincere. Justyn wrote a response saying that he found the article offensive and adsum worked very hard on the event. Jim Marks and Amy Capolupo attended the meeting to make sure that we know that what Dan said was his own personal opinion and that it did not reflect the beliefs of DSS. In the meeting, Justyn voiced that he was disappointed in the language in the editorial. Amy added that she found the editorial offensive because of her involvement with ADSUM as advisor. Megan voiced concern that Dan Burke's editorial will be associated with DSS. She did not want people to think that DSS and ADSUM were at war with each other. ADSUM and DSS has decided to work together to release a statement saying that DSS had no qualms with the Tunnel of Oppression.
Office Pictures- Megan decided to hang the pictures from the Tunnel of Oppression project up in the office and Faith took some of them down because she found some of them to be too difficult to look at. This caused a bit of unrest in the group because most of the ADSUM members wanted the picture up in the office. Megan commented that she felt like people will be more motivated to advocate for people with disabilities if they see disturbing pictures. If they only see happy pictures they won't feel the need to do anything because advocacy is being taken care of by other people. Ben Dawson said that he thought the pictures were unprofessional. He also added that these pictures are of institutions and do not have anything to do with college. Since ADSUM does not work within the community there is no point in having them in the office. Megan replied that this is these pictures are the kind of thing premed and psychology students should get exposed to now. She also added that she wants ADSUM to get involved in the community. Amy piped in and said that she did not think this issue would be resolved today. She suggested we bring the pictures that some people find disturbing to the meeting. After everyone has a look at the pictures all ADSUM members can find some compromise. Faith added that she felt that this should not be an issue of majority rules because the feelings of the minority are important too.
Opportunity for ADSUM members to Speak in UM Education classes An offer has been made by Morgen Alwell (professor in ed. department) for ADSUM to present at 2 education classes about their personal experience and advice to future teachers. See copy below. She asked for people interested, who have personal experience going through the school system with a disability to speak at Education classes to students about what they wish their teachers knew way back then. Now is the chance to make the K-12 education system a better place, by sharing tips to make people who will one day be teachers aware of disability etiquette or how to integrate a student with a particular disability into their future classroom.
Here are the classes she is thinking of, and times:
Her special education assessment and instruction class meets on Mondays from 4:10 - 8:00 p.m. in Ed. 314; so either this coming Monday the 2nd, OR the 9th, 16th, or 23rd, for any half hour or so in that time frame would be great... (Whatever is convenient/ possible).
The other class is Introduction to Exceptionalities: we meet from 4:10 - 7:00 on Tuesdays in Ed. 314. Possible times to speak with that class would be on Nov. 24th, or Dec. 1st or 8th-again, anytime in the 4:10 - 7:00 time frame that is convenient or possible.
Board of Regents Meeting Nov. 18th to 20th. Budget cuts to DSS should attempt to be compensated for by ADSUM going to Regents meeting and advocating for increased funding to the University of Montana. Marissa and Faith will be attending and we will get feedback of our speech from Jim Marks and Matt Fennel.
Justyn- update on status of OCR complaint with science labs. He talked to someone about the OCR complaint and it is technically closed. However, he is going to bring the complaint up in the settlement meeting.
