Your Name: Brendan Kelleher
Your Major (s): Management Information Systems and Accounting
What organization did you intern for? Briefly describe what that organization does.
The internship that I worked on was through a company called Axiom IT Solutions. Axiom is primarily a software development company, who specialize in custom software.
What are some highlights from your time with this organization?
Axiom provided me with a very valuable learning experience. The work I did pertained mainly to a CRM (constituent relation management) system that Axiom was working on for the Sustainable Business Council (SBC) of Missoula. I was responsible for defining the system requirements for the SBC’s new system. I have just completed the work on the requirements, and am meeting with the board of the SBC on Monday to present what I have done. Once I have obtained the feedback of the board and my mentors, I will recommend a system that I feel best fits the needs of the SBC. This was very gratifying because the work I performed had a lot of serious implications regarding the SBC and their everyday operations.
Describe some of the challenges you faced during this internship.
I faced a lot of challenges throughout my internship experience. The biggest challenge I faced was the ambiguity of the situation. The SBC didn’t know what they wanted out of their new system; it was my job to define the requirements and tell them what they wanted. This made it difficult on me because my client was just as lost as I was. They were counting on me to shed light on the situation.
How did this internship impact your view of the world and your career choices? Did it have a significant impact on your life?
I’m not sure that this experience changed my view of the world, but it will definitely impact my career choices. I really enjoyed the work I did analyzing the requirements, and would love to get involved in a similar line of work after graduation.
How did your internship relate to your field of study?
I am a Management Information Systems and Accounting double major. This internship was definitely MIS related, and I relied on a lot of the skills I learned in the classroom to succeed in this position. Internships are great because they affirm a lot of the knowledge you learn in the classroom.
What advice would you give to other students looking to do an internship?
Do It! You can learn a lot in the classroom, but there is no substitute for real-world experience. I think that an internship experience is an important part of an all-encompassing education, and that everyone can benefit from such an experience.
