How did you get connected with this academic enrichment opportunity and was there someone who helped you get involved with this opportunity?
I applied to be an RA and was hired for my sophomore year. I am now starting my third year working for the Residence Life Office. I decided to apply to be an RA because I was really interested in helping other students make their transition to college easier than mine had been.
What was the most rewarding part of this experience?
I decided to apply to be an RA because I was really interested in helping other students make their transition to college easier than mine had been. The most rewarding part of being an RA is being able to offer resources and make a difference in the lives of other students. I think that the model of peer leading works extremely well because people are more apt to learn from you if they view you as their peer. The job also has had many personal benefits for me. I have gained a wonderful social circle as well as a better understanding of the campus and its resources.
What surprised you during this experience?
This job never ceases to surprise me. I have loved how informed I feel about the campus community and its resources. I believe that a large part of life is networking and this job has helped me become connected with so many people who are able to help me and vice versa.
What doors did participation in this experience open for you?
The experience has opened up my whole life path for me. If it weren’t for this job, I would not have decided to pursue a career in higher education and student affairs. I plan on getting my masters degree in the field and continuing to work in universities either in Residence Life or in other student affairs opportunities.
How has participating in this academic enrichment experience affected you as a person and as a student?
This experience has helped me become more comfortable with myself and with my community. I have become much more of an outspoken leader because of this experience and I believe this has translated not only into my day to day life but into my academics as well.
