Dance Division
All dance majors are expected to complete both a Junior Creative/Research Project and
a Senior Creative/Research Project. These projects can take many forms. Some have included:
- Creation of choreographic work for a Dance Up Close or Dance New Works Concert and completion of a portfolio and process paper to accompany the creative project.
- Creation of choreographic work in a venue outside of the School of Theatre and Dance and completion of a portfolio and process paper to accompany the creative project.
- Creation of a choreographic work in collaboration with other creative artists and completion of a portfolio and process paper to accompany the creative project.
- Creation of a dance for camera work for one of our dance concerts and completion of a portfolio and process paper to accompany the creative project. A research project that delves deeply into a specific area of dance studies. An extensive paper is created to document the research and conclusions.
Past Projects
- Dance choreography that combined dance with an in depth study of New Zealand birds; presented as part of our Senior Capstone Thesis Concert
- Creation of an evening length work by two choreographers working with scenic design artists, video artists and costume design artists
- Travel to Africa (as part of the International Studies Program); investigation of dance in the resident culture; research with African Dance professionals and world dance specialists into the role of university dance classes and traditional dance forms; this was a research as well as dance performance.
