AISS Peer Mentor Program

We are so glad that you want to join the Peer Mentoring program and a Mentor. If selected as a successful candidate, you will be assigned up to three mentees and help assist them throughout their educational career. This opportunity will allow you to make a huge impact of the future success of your mentees by connecting them to student services, learning more about campus life, and simply being there for them to address any questions they may have about UM and our department. 

The AISS office is looking for students from any major to be peer mentors.  The person(s) selected will work under the supervision of the AISS Director and/or the Program Coordinator.  The total number of hours to be worked for the semester is ninety (90) hours.   AISS operates its programs year-round, so there may be the possibility for additional hours during normal UM closure periods (e.g. Summer Orientation).


  • An interest in and respect for the unique multicultural environment in AISS and the campus community
  • Sincere desire to guide another person(s) to help him or her achieve academic and personal success as a UM student
  • Ability to communicate and be nonjudgmental
  • Have excellent listening skills
  • Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives
  • Ability to handle confidential matters 


  • Make a minimum four-month commitment to developing and maintaining a mentor relationship with one or two new UM students
  • Meet with mentee(s) on a weekly basis
  • Attend mentor orientation and training sessions
  • Attend ongoing mentor training and bi-weekly meetings as established by the AISS office
  • Attend activities – social and academic provided by AISS
  • Meet with mentee on a regular basis to establish a good working relationship and to support mentee in academic goals
  • Assist mentee with problems that interfere with mentee’s success at school
  • Provide mentor plan, time logs, evaluations and other paperwork as requested by the AISS office


  • Salary:  $8.30

  • 2.0 GPA
  • American Indian Preference
  • Junior, Senior, or Graduate educational status preferred (as of upcoming 2016 Fall Semester)
  • Previous mentors with good record will receive preference



  1. Serve as a mentor for 2018 Fall Semester
  2. Attend monthly mentor meetings and Spring/Fall Mentor orientation sessions
  3. Maintain four (4) contacts each month with assigned mentee(s)
  4. Maintain and submit a monthly time log of contacts
  5. Attend and participate in all program activities
  6. Complete an end-of-semester mentor program evaluation
  7. Be dedicated and dependable in assisting the new students to achieve academic and personal goals
  8. Preserve confidentiality of all information learned about the students

*  All information is kept confidential and will only be used by the American Indian Student Services in the matchmaking process and to determine eligibility for this program.

Montana GEAR UP/AISS Peer Mentor

All applicants who apply for the peer mentoring program will also be reviewed for the position for the Montana GEAR UP/AISS Peer Mentoring Program. This position requires a higher level of responsibility and pay is set at $10.00 an hour.
