Title

Established in 1993, the Montana Geographic Alliance is a member of a nationwide network of state alliances organized and sponsored in part by the National Geographic Society. The Alliance and its network partners promote geography education throughout the U.S. via grassroots convening and professional development for teachers.

The purpose of the Alliance is to strengthen geographical education in Montana. This goal is accomplished through a variety of programs: a summer geography institute, teacher workshops, and staff-development programs. It provides lesson plans and other resources keyed to state and local K-12 curriculum guidelines. Through expanding affiliations on local, state, national, and international levels, the Alliance provides an opportunity to integrate a diverse and innovative range of geographic education programs.

Currently, the Alliance pursues geography education with working affiliations with the Montana Watercourse's "Project WET", the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Park's "Project WILD", the National Forest Service, the National Park Service, and other local organizations and individuals throughout the state of Montana. The Alliance coordinators and teacher-consultants are available to offer advice, technical support, and local curriculum reform efforts.

The Alliance works with the Montana Office of Public Instruction to further the incorporation of national geography standards into the state standards and guidelines. The Alliance also pays special attention to working at the district level, as the state's education system is highly localized. The Alliance  was successful in the implementation of several AP Human Geography courses throughout the state in 2005- the course was not offered at all in 2004.

The Alliance distributes classroom materials, exercises, and lesson plans that are developed by trained master teachers and NASA education outreach staff.

The Alliance provides outreach materials (banners, announcements, newspaper coverage, wall displays, radio/TV coverage, etc) for school and community participation in National Geographic's "Geography Awareness Week" each November.
