Bio
I was born and raised in a farming family on the windy plains and in the austere beauty of Northeastern Montana. I traveled across the mountains to Missoula, Montana to study Art at The University of Montana. I later added Art Education to my studies, the field in which I have worked since 1989 first teaching K-12 Art in the public school system and now methods at The University of Montana. In Missoula, I have had the opportunity to work and exhibit with an amazing array of artists and educators. I have made Missoula my home but I am balanced by the dichotomy of our state and the people who inhabit it.
Statement
I work in mixed media on a very intimate scale. I enjoy the power a small piece has to pull the audience toward it. It communicates in whispers and secrets. One must pause and look closely in order to observe the work fully. I embed language in the art as strands of unspoken dialogue. I am constantly striving in my artwork to evoke in my audience a hint of commonality, an impression of shared history and sense of recognition.
Teaching Philosophy
At The University of Montana, I teach Elementary Education majors a methods course in Art Education. It is my desire to build a foundation of aesthetic literacy in our future elementary school teachers. I believe that visual communication, creative problem-solving and artistic exploration should be a part of every educational endeavor.
