Elizabeth Dove, Assistant Professor
Teaching Philosophy
As both an artist and a teacher, I prefer to take an interdisciplinary approach that attempts to match the concerns of content to materials and process. As an instructor I begin with tradition as the foundation, but continue to seek out innovative processes and ideas (such as digital and non-toxic applications) in an effort to bridge the gap between traditional media and emerging technologies. Within each course I also try to expand upon the common assumption that artmaking is purely an idiosyncratic, individual pursuit by designing projects that require group collaboration; these projects might be integrated into the curriculum through peer-review critique sessions, or studio assignments of cooperative 'passed' printmaking plates or combined group drawings. I hope to lead students to the point where they can begin to freely choose media and materials based upon the intrinsic qualities of these processes; and how these qualities can support their ideas, their artistic concerns, and their content.
