Bio

Lucy Capehart is a graduate student in photography at the School of Art at The University of Montana. Her large color studies of domestic interiors and the American cultural landscape have been widely exhibited, in solo exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum, mid-town Y Gallery in New York City, Blue Sky Gallery in Portland and the Missoula Art Museum. Her work is featured on book and cd covers and has been published in the New York Times (Sophisticated Traveler) Magazine, Oxford American, Architecture and the book Local Heroes Changing America. During the summer of 1999 Lucy photographed Navajo sheepherders and weavers for a project called, Indivisible: Stories of American Community.

Lucy Capehart has received an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission in 1985, an Emerging Artist Grant from the Arts Council of the Lower Cape Fear (North Carolina), 1996 and an Opportunity Grant from the Montana Arts Council, 2000. Her work is in the collections of the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, the Special Collections Library, Duke University and the Navajo Nation Museum, Window Rock, Arizona.

I am interested in documenting chance encounters with everyday objects and events as moments of precarious beauty.
