Statement

Painting manifests itself not only in the application of a medium, but in its capacity to transform. Painting is rooted in powerful processes and histories which give it a foundation of strength. However, its ability to evolve into ideas which can be readily manipulated to create areas of space, color, sound and movement only intensifies painting as a field of investigation and discourse. Painting has developed into a living and breathing art form whose tentacles reach into numerous spheres, continually branching and expanding, ever changing.

My thesis work is based upon concepts that investigate and illustrate the portrayal of psychological disorders.  I attempt to visually capture and understand the psychological elements specific in their effects and manifestations while seeking to create an engaging, relatable experience.  Psychiatric literature, interviews and stories, such as Perkins-Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper and Robertson's The Insanity of Mary Gerard, are among the sources I reference in my research. My work is pan-academic including painting, video and installation. with painting and drawing as the most vital to my formal processes.
