MFA Thesis Exhibition: Cathryn Sugg & Rebecca Weed

April 29 - May 14, 2010: MFA Thesis Exhibition: Cathryn Sugg & Rebecca Weed
Gallery of Visual Arts presents the MFA Thesis Exhibition by painters Cathryn Sugg and Rebecca Weed. This exhibition is the culmination of three years of graduate studies in painting and drawing.
Cathryn Sugg’s paintings attempt to define the space between so-called opposites. The area of constant disquiet that exists between gatherer/ hunter, feminine/ masculine, urban/ rural, interior/ exterior, wife/ spinster, dependant/ heroic. The work uses iconic and regionally recognizable imagery to investigate a slippery and shifting space of tension, of “in-between-ness.”
Rebecca Weed's large-scale paintings involve both oil paintings and drawings on tracing paper. On the one hand an oil painting takes time and patience, on the other hand a drawing is loose and immediate. Both speak to an element of measuring and remembering. An oil painting is meant to stand against time, a drawing on tracing paper is meant to succumb to it.
Please join us for the opening reception Thursday, 4/29, 5-7 PM, gallery hours Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 11 AM-5 PM, Thursday, 11 AM-6 PM, Monday by appointment, 243-2813.
