* Current advocacy issues:
- Late professor textbook ordering- next week will meet with Royce Engstrom, Bryan Thorton on Friday.
- The issue is that a blind student had to drop a class because of the book being late therefore she did not have enough time to convert the text.
- Solution: Professor awareness
- Captioning on campus of YouTube or other videos shown in class should be common knowledge. We will be creating a professor’s awareness PowerPoint slide show with Lucy to train all professors on deaf and hard of hearing in the classroom. Two weeks from now the PowerPoint will be written up with her help and the feedback of ADSUM. There is a committee for the UC looking into making videos shown in the theatre CC as much as possible; we’ll see how they plan to do this in the future.
- Jon and Faith will meet with Jim Foley hopefully next week to go over ADSUM’s strategic plan for this semester (group’s most important goals).
* Committees
- ADA team: Assistive listening device meeting went well, the venues have taken inventory of their current equipment and have been advised what needs to be purchased or bidded on by vendors. In the future there will be vendors coming and giving estimates and bids for the different building rooms in the UC. Other venues will be sharing info so that they all purchase the same equipment that is compatible with each other. Sharing is not always possible, plus sharing may be tedious to have on demand passing receivers back and forth. Also the issue of how many receivers to buy, 4% of seating is the ADAAG guideline, but it is being discussed if that many receivers are necessary.
- COT committee: the COT phase 1 building plans are completed and were approved by a vote. They included room plans with accessible ramps/elevators and awareness of the need for lo9oping rooms with more than 50 seats with fixed seating with Assistive Listening Systems. The new COT campus looks like it will be accessible form the start!
- Committee on fee/grade policy on retakes: they are going to probably remake the fee to $50 and charge every student who retakes a class, regardless of if they want their lower grade dropped out of their average GPA. Final decision is still pending

First meeting back for Spring semester 2008. First Jon Pielet gave update on important activities going on with the ADA team. There has been a grievance filed by a visually impaired student about the university griz email system and poor accessibility. New magazines need to be purchased with budget that would be useful for students with disabilities, all members should come to the next meeting with magazine ideas. Discussed the VR grad policy meeting should be earlier in the week so Jon Pielet can attend on Feb. 12th. Next week logistics for ADSUM's 20th anniversary need to be laid down so funding can be requested to create anniversary dinner. Also in future new regular members will be the ones to update ADSUM's bylaws. Emily will attend the new student's training on the ASUM budgeting process. She will share this information with ADSUM's members who are not familiar with it. Jon Pielet may be retiring after this semester as ADSUM's director, so members need to learn from him and train themselves on how to keep ADSUM functioning.

Gale Price one of the ASUM Presidential candidates came to the meeting to tell us about some of her platform. She was looking for campaign volunteers and reminded us to get out and vote. She also asked if people were interested in receiving email updates regarding important university related topics and passed around a sign up sheet. We voiced our concern about have an inadequate budget to carry out our legislative activities. Price said she would push to get ADSUM and all student groups a larger budget through special allocations for legislative activities.
Newsletter
The articles for the newsletter are due next Thursday the meeting and the newsletter will be produced by Monday the 26th of April.
Allison Whyte from The Montana Center for Disabilities is doing a workshop on people with disabilities here at the university on Sunday the 25th from 10:00-12:00 and is looking for volunteers to help out. If you are interested please contact Mike Beers to find out more information.
ADA Team recently got the elevator approved for the Math Building Remodel Plan
Bernie from DSS talked with Corinne and Facility Services has received about $15,000 to conduct the 3rd Phase of the Transition Plan. Bernie thought that about $8,000 of that money would go to pay for the people conducting the transition plan. It was brought up that some ADSUM members put in a bid to conduct the 3rd Phase. As more details unfold we will make the decision of whether or not this would be a summer job that some members could take on.

Comedy Night: Mike Goldberg from Daymond Brooks and Associates to give us info on available comics and the cost. UC Programming has informed us that there is a lack of funds for the project and we should shoot for next semester. We have decided to postpone this activity until next year.
We are going to put a weekly message into the KBGA Events Calendar, the Kainin, and the Independent to attract new people.
Travis has the outline for the newsletter set up but we still need the articles. We are shooting to have it done by the end of the week. The newsletter will be distributed in electronic and paper formats.
We talked about the possibility of putting on a film festival. Marsha Katz at the Rural Institute has a large number of videos on disability. We also need to look into other resources.
We need to redo our display case very soon. We discussed several themes for our display case. Some of the themes that were brought up were disability and sexuality and famous people with disabilities. We need to ask Bernie for items to put in the case.
We have a huge bed sheet, a fat Sharpie marker and are currently looking for a theme to make a large banner to hang in the UC.
Suzy Arndt from Meadow Hill School is looking for a student with a disability to sit on a panel with her students. The student would help promote disability awareness. We do not know when the panel is and we have not heard back.
Instead of pursuing the Greek Life office, we decided that it is a non-issue this semester and we will not pursue the possibility of acquiring a bigger office for right now.
At the Helena meeting the director didn't even show up. The purpose of the meeting was to look into centralizing disability services for universities throughout the state. Bozeman seems to have very to offer students with disabilities. ADSUM needs to go statewide.
There is a training session being offered in Butte by the Rural Institute but it is unclear what for.
DSS has a new access map on their website for easier access around campus. ADSUM will establish a new link to the map on our website.
March 4, 2004
The ladies will be holding what they have termed the ADSUM Ladies Guild on March 12. They are planning on making a quilt with access symbol that we can raffle off during Fall 04 and get ASUM to match funds. ADSUM will provide funding for the materials used to make the quilt.
We talked about the possibility of bringing the wheelchair accessible hot air balloon back for Fall 04
Erin Romine US Department of Education saw our website and called the office to talk about access issues that ADSUM was having. They support student groups like ADSUM
Get a copy of the budget outline from Bobby Durringer of the Finance Dept.

Newsletter
Articles are due in next Thursday 02-26-04 so we can get at least one newsletter out this semester
Kaimin Article about College of Technology Radiology student:
ADSUM received a call from Natalie Story, a Kaimin reporter, who informed us of a COT student who's advisor had told him that he couldn't be in the radiology program because he wouldn't be able to perform the essential functions of the job due to a disability
Jim Marks said the faculty can advise the disabled student about the difficulty of doing certain programs but can not tell a student they "can't do" a course of study
ADSUM will discuss the issue further and decide which course of action to take in the next week
College of Tech Issues:
It was discussed that it would be beneficial to have a student ADSUM representative at the Tech in order for us to start to address access and other issues at the COT
A couple of issues that were identified at the COT were that there is no accessible route between UM and COT campuses, there is no accessible route of travel from South Ave. and the COT, and that there are no curb cuts for wheelchairs from the accessible parking spaces to the building(s)
Budget:
ADSUM requested from ASUM $3124 for next year's budget and all but $407 was cut from the budget after executive recommendations were made.
We have to do formal lobbying on Feb 23 at 7:30pm to try and get ASUM to reinstate some of the money that was cut from the budget. Most important, we must ensure we get adequate funding for a work study student as they not only provide office support but also serve as accommodations to members with disabilities to perform necessary office functions.
Diversity Through Laughter Comedy Night:
We are still planning to bring in a comedian with a disability. Mike has contacted a number of comedians and we are waiting to hear back from those individuals.
In addition to the comedian, we are planning on having students do a skit to open up the nights events
UC Programming has said that they are more than happy to help out with the costs, planning, and logistics of this event
Meeting in Helena:
Jim Marks has asked that we send a student representative to the ADA/504 meeting in Helena on February 27th. Andrea Dahl is the student ADSUM representative that sits on the ADA Team and has indicated that she will be traveling to Helena with the Team. Mike Beers will also check to see whether it will be feasible for him to travel to Helena with the team.
Math Building:
At one of the ADA Team meetings, Hugh Jesse from Facility Services has indicated that VP Bob Duringer has found money to put an elevator in the Math Building. The cost of the elevator is $680,000 and would be placed in the rear of the building in order to preserve the building's historical status.
The next ADSUM Meeting will be held on Thursday February 26th at 3:30PM in UC215

Meeting was called to order at 3:35 by VP Travis Hoffman.
Everyone gave introductions and Jim provided everyone with a history of why ADSUM was form and of previous accomplishments.
The university subcommittees ADSUM has seats on are the ADA/504 Team and the Diversity Advisory Council. Travis will call V.P. Bob Duringer to check if we have a seat on the University's Building Committee. It would also be a good idea for ADSUM to put a representative on the UC's Master Space Committee.
We identified some possible goals to work toward during the course of the year. They are:
Forming a scholarship for high school students with disabilities
Athletic scholarship
Leadership/advocacy scholarship
Check on lowering the cost of secondary education for students with disabilities
Bringing in different speakers to ADSUM meetings as well as possible speakers for different events
Doing some skills training for ADSUM members such as leadership and advocacy training
Getting people involved in Eagle Mount
Election are going to take place at the ADSUM meeting on October 9th at 3:30pm in UC 215. Nominations will be taken at the meeting on October 2nd at 3:30pm in UC 215. Travis Hoffman resigned as vice president so elections can take place in accordance with the bylaws.
Meeting adjourned 4:30pm.

- Bernie Gantert - DSS
- Travis Hoffman - Vice President
- Jody Scott - Asst. Sec./Treasure
- Jim Marks - DSS/Advisor
- Kasandra Lundquist - President
The first item discussed in the ADSUM meeting was the Stadium Resolution written by Travis Hoffman ADSUM Vice-President. The resolution was regarding the limited seating issues. The University of Montana is failing to meet minimum seating requirements, and the lack of accessible seating in the Grizzly Stadium. Only twelve seats will be accessible out of the total four thousand allocated to Grizzly Stadium. The resolution will be taken to the ASUM Senate for approval.
Jim talked of article written by Peter Singer an Australian animal rights activist. In the article Peter believes that babies born with disabilities should be euphemized. Jim will send the article to ADSUM if any one is interested. The article was in the New York Times. (The article is suppose to be very interesting)
SARS is the Student Assault Recovery Services. The ADSUM organization has been invited to the SARS meetings and they were wondering if ADSUM had anything to contribute to SARS. If anyone is interested in their meeting we will gladly let you know when they will be having their next meeting.
Kasandra will be looking around for deals on a sign for ADSUM. If anyone has any ideas on where to pick one up for a reasonable price, please call the ADSUM office and let us know. -Thanks-
ADSUM would like to set up meetings; we discussed having a meeting every other week. If anyone would like to have a meeting at a specific time please let us know, and we'll gladly try to accommodate your time.
March is disability awareness month and there was talk of getting Bob Prestis and Dan Burke together and possibly having a radio broadcast? Bob Prestis is a case manager and can be reached at the Montana Mental Health Office. Bernie also talked of having a movie for Disability awareness month along with other events.
We were wondering how ADSUM could recruit more people. If anyone has any ideas please let us know, we need more active members for ADSUM to be successful. Before the semester is over we will be having elections for ADSUM. If you would like to be nominated, or know of someone that would like to be nominated please attend our meetings.

Housing issues are what we first discussed.
The housing meeting that Kasandra and Travis went to about the apts. These people also attended, VP Duringer, Barbara Holmann, Kevin Kresbach, Ron Brunell, Bernie Gantert, Jim Marks, and Jon Swan. As a result of this meeting there are going to be 22 fully accessible apts. on the ground floors in the housing units that the university is building. The rest on the ground floors will be adaptable and all will contain a roll-in shower for a total of 44 adaptable apartments. These adaptable apartments will only take a day or two to make fully accessible. There is going to be 18 extra inches in every bathroom including the upper levels so that way they can be retro fitted for accessibility in the future.
We need to make a meeting with the V.P of research so that he can help find grants and other money to purchase elevators and to retrofit other parts of campus housing for future accessibility.
We discussed meeting responsibilities. Usually it is the Secretary/Treasurers job to take minutes but since we are operating without one the responsibility falls on the assistant which is Tracy Watzke. Tracy will take the minutes during the meeting, type them out, get them approved by a member of the Executive Board, and then distribute them to all members prior to the next meeting with a reminder for that meeting.
Tracy will get blue paint for sheets and get "No Access" stencils from home.
We talked about extravaganza form and the reasons behind it
We discussed ways of getting more people involved in ADSUM as this semester we have had a very poor attendance record. Some ideas we came up with are puttting recruitment ads is DSS office, run recruitment tables at the beginning of each semester.
WE NEED TO GET A NEWSLETTER OUT. EVERYONE IS ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE. Write about your experience at the university or disability.
Human Rights day is coming up and Travis will be speaking at the Rankin Peace Center.
We should to do a table during that day if we can get people to help out.
We discussed the following as the future events that we would like to see ADSUM doing in the upcoming year/
Do table during disability awareness month, week long table or month long flyers, get Serena's Song balloon back next year. Money donations were made by Community Medical Center, Vocational Rehabilitation, Summit Independent Living Center. Food donations were made by Outback Steakhouse. It was brought up that Community and the Outback both wanted the balloon to fly at their locations so bringing the balloon for more than one day to fly at several locations would be best if we can muster up the funding.
Kasandra is going to see if Max Baucus will donate some money for it and also be a guest speaker.
Christmas party ? There doesn't seem to be enough time to set one up. We will not be able to adopt a family this year.

Sandy and Andy came to discuss a class sponsored by New Directions. They want to familiarize people with disabilities to fitness programs and encourage them to take this class. The program is running thru the pt clinic. The name of the program is living with disabilities.
Bernie discussed a movie that should be shown during Disability Awareness Month in March. The movie will cost 250 dollars and we think that we will be able to get the movie, we also discussed renting the theater for the movie.

The meeting started with Dustin talking about the architectural design of the apartments that the University is planning to build near Dornblazer. He discussed the difference between the two plans they had. With the Bathrooms all the same size. Bedrooms have 45 degree angle to get into bedroom, there won't be enough space in rooms so they shouldn't charge people for damages to walls.
Jill wrote letter from the nontraditional students of Phoenix about mobility impaired people who don't use wheelchairs, saying that if some one who's not confined to wheelchair wants to live on top floor but has trouble walking up stairs couldn't?
Family housing is cheaper than new apartments, what are people with kids to do if they say no kids allowed, which is against fair housing laws, they are to offer them an alternative?
Jim said that Ron Brunell said to get as many bodies housed as they can 432. But if you push for accessibility that number could drop.
They say that the apartments are $400 per person, which means if a single person can afford $800 monthly they can live alone but those who can't afford that will be forced to have a roommate. In the community a one bedroom apartment runs about $395-$495 a month, a two bedroom in the community runs for about $495-$595 a month, A three bedroom runs about $595 up. Studios run for about $395-$600 a month.
Travis asked that the articles for newsletter be in by next Friday the 25th. We will focus on the housing and state budget cut issues mostly with this first newsletter. Maybe some member intros too if you all want to write anything up.
Shop around for ASUM, Sustainability to if we can share table. We have a table in the UC on Wednesday and we need people to help get stuff ready for it as well as man the table so feel free to volunteer. If you're not familiar with the housing project, we will fill you in prior to tabling.
Need to call city about curb cut at Maurice & Beckwith. Sidewalk between Forestry & Honors College the ledge is too high. Jill said that they should redo the bricks in the Oval because they are too uneven.
See about getting door button inside vestibule to outside door of the Social Sciences building moved.
It was asked if skateboarders and bicyclist were rude? Are there more bikes then there are students? Bikes on wheelchair ramps?]

Meeting started at 3:05 P.M.
The DPHHS (Department of Public Health and Human Services) has changed the basic guidelines of prescription drugs and co-pays. The co-pay has increased as well as the deductible. These changes affect everyone who uses Medicaid. We have decided that this is an issue we should get involved in and stay involved in.
ADSUM will write a letter regarding these Medicaid cuts and we will also be tabling in the UC from May 7th until May 9th. The letter writing will take place on May 7th in UC205 (the ADSUM office) at 2:00P.M. Please make plans to attend this very important meeting as this issue affects a lot of people including students here on campus. Bring your ideas and thoughts on a piece of paper so we can draft the best letter possible.
Jim reported on DSS issues. He stated that a computer tech employee will hopefully be hired by the next school year.
Today was also election day and here's how the votes stacked up: (please note that there were 7 eligible voters at the meeting and there are 8 votes in each category. Theresa casted her vote by ballot in a sealed envelope minutes before the meeting was called to order and then had to leave. Since we kept quorum without her, her vote was valid and did count.)
President:
· Dustin 2 votes
· Kasandra 5 votes
· Mike 1 vote
Kasandra will be ADSUM's new President.
Vice President:
· Dustin 2 votes
· Travis 5 votes
· Kasandra 1 votes
Travis will hold the Vice President position.
Secretary/Treasure:
· Mike 2 votes
· Kasandra 2 votes
· Jody 4 votes
Jody will be the new Secretary/Treasure.
Congratulations to the winners, it started off as a very close election but in the end we saw no need for a recount.

Attending members:
- Travis
- Jody
- Mike
- Dianne
- Alva
- Sherene
- Kasandra
- Dustin
- Theresa.
Alva followed up on his idea of teacher nominations and selection of "most helpful" teachers.
Travis stated that ADSUM is not interested in sponsoring the program and he would like to see the program campus wide, not just limited to students in DSS. The program was discussed with members of ADSUM in the past weeks and most feel that they would not be interested in being involved in it. Travis recommended that Alva take his idea to ASUM.
WEEL is holding is annual "Momma Jam" celebration on Mothers Day in Caras Park. ADSUM decided to do a $20 AD in their program.
Nominations were taken for executive offices for next year and the voting will be done at the next meeting.
There are only TWO meetings left this year. Next week is elections and there is only one meeting left after that. It was discussed that we might have a little potluck at the last meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Travis Hoffman at 3:00 PM.
Wheelchair basketball has been postponed to a later date. During the meeting we decided the tournament could be held on May 25th.
We still need to pick up more sponsors. We are going to do the "iron on" and buy plain T-shirts for the tournament.
Alva would like to create a system where the students can discuss how the professors are helping them and what positive points they do in the classroom. The system would be designed for students who are registered with disabilities services. They would be able to give feedback to the teachers on how they are doing.
The way he proposed to do it was to send out a mailing survey to all students registered with disabilities services and have them return the survey to ADSUM. The results would then be determined and made available to the public. There would be two costs involved, printing and postage. E-mail and telephone surveys were also discussed but the mailing survey is probably the best option. Alva will return in two weeks for further discussion in the decision.
Jim discussed vocational rehabilitation and that the number of people who attend school here with the assistance of vocational rehabilitation has been declining. He discussed the possibility of holding seminar for students to educate them on what vocational rehabilitation can do.
Meeting adjourned 4:00 PM
Future meetings and events will be posted in the events calendar. Please check regularly as not to miss out on anything and keep communication open
