Java is software that must reside on all Windows machines that use a web browser to access Banner (https://inb.umt.edu). Java runs automatically with your web browser and connects Windows-based clients and Oracle Application Forms. At UM the current Java version used on the Banner server is 1.6.31
Other web applications utilize Java, so it may already be installed on your computer. If so, when you login to Banner for the first time, you may not need to perform the installation. However, if Java is not already installed on your computer or if you have a prior version installed, the first time you login to Banner, your browser will notify you that the plug-in is required and will then walk you through the download process. Note: You must have administrative privileges on your computer in order to download Java. Review the instructions for first time installation.
*Java Updates
The Banner server is updated to the most current version of Java quarterly, in conjunction with Banner maintenance. A server lag time is possible with Java updates if a new version is released prior to the quarterly activity. However, Banner runs on the Java 1.6.x family, so if an update is released prior to this time frame, users can update if prompted to do so. No version conflicts will occur..
Mac Users
If the most current version of Java is installed on your computer, you will not need to install the Java Plug-in. To check, go to the Apple icon on the menu bar, then Software Update. Your computer will check for new software updates, including Java. If a Java update is available, download it. During your first time log-in, you may see a dialog box that asks you to verify the signature of the signed applet. Click Trust.
