Federal Studies

Studies have been performed by agencies of the Federal Government, specifically the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The EPA has been working on the actual clean up of the mine site outside of Libby, as well as removal of asbestos from homes in Libby. The EPA is also in the process of determining the chemical composition of the asbestos found in Libby. The ATSDR's mission is to serve the public by using the best science, taking responsive public health actions, and providing trusted health information to prevent harmful exposures and disease related to toxic substances. This agency has been conducting the health screenings in Libby, as well as the mortality studies. Reports of ongoing studies will be made accessible from this web site as they are made available.
