Teaching at Bitterroot College

  • Access online faculty accounts and resources:
    • Begin by activating your NetID:
      • Step 1: Contact Patty Skinner, Bitterroot College (BC) Operations, for Employee ID number (790-XX-XXXX)
      • Step 2: Go to NetID Lookup and provide Last Name and Birth Date
      • Step 3: Go to CyberBear login page 
      • Step 4: In NetID box, type NetID; in Password box, type last six digits of your Employee ID number; click on Login button
      • Step 5: Complete activation by following steps to reset password and establish a security question
    • For managing your student roster and posting your grades, use your CyberBear account (access through UM Login using your NetID).  IMPORTANT: for information about entering final grades, visit the UM Registrar's Office website.
    • For communicating electronically with students, staff, or administration, activate your UM Employee Email account. To activate and login to email, visit UM Employee Email link on BC website homepage or BC website footer. For activation password, contact Patty Skinner, BC Operations.
    • For posting course information online and/or communicating with students online, establish a Moodle Supplement for your course. Request a Moodle Supplement at UMOnline (NetID required).
    • For posting and managing your professional information in the BC faculty directory, use your NetID to login to the UM Employee Database.

  • Computers and printers for faculty use are located in Room 112 (Faculty Room).  Faculty computers can print either to the printers in the Faculty Room or to the copier located in Room 110 (Copier/Mail Room). The copier has a USB port for direct printing (documents must be in pdf format) as well as scanningIMPORTANT: entry into the Copier/Mail Room and use of the copier require pass codes. See Patty Skinner, BC Operations, for the Copier/Mail Room door pass code. The faculty pass code for the copier is posted on the wall behind the copier.
  • The copier is for instructor and staff use only. Please direct students needing copies to the Reception Desk.
  • BC faculty members have full privileges with respect to the copier, however for conservation purposes and as a cost saving measure, faculty are encouraged to scan or save documents as pdf files and send them electronically to students rather than distribute paper copies. IMPORTANT: to minimzie faculty and student copying, faculty are encouraged to submit course packets to the UM Bookstore for printing and binding which are then made available at cost to students via the BC Bookstore.

REMINDER: Please remember that printers are not copiers. If you need to produce documents in multiples, print an original on the printer and make all subsequent copies on a copier or send your copy job directly to the copier from the Faculty Room computers.

  • All BC classrooms are equipped with an instructor computer attached to a computer projector; for assistance with using the equipment, contact Patty Skinner, BC Operations. For faculty login information for BC classroom instructor computers, contact Patty Skinner, BC Operations. Faculty has full administrator privileges on all BC classroom instructor computers. Please do not share the faculty password with students.
  • The BC has student laptops which are housed in a cart in the BC Learning and Testing Center. Student login for all BC computers is: USERNAME: bcstudent PASSWORD: bcstudent. All BC student laptops connect automatically to the BC wireless (bcguest).
  • BC faculty members may connect personal devices to the BC wireless. To connect to BC wireless: select UMwpa as the wireless connection; use your NetID and password to connect to BC wireless.  For assistance with setting up personal devices to access the BC wireless, contact Patty Skinner, BC Operations.
  • The BC has one flat-screen television for instructional use.  Contact Patty Skinner, BC Operations, to reserve a television. DVDs may be played directly through the instructor computer and computer projector located in each classroom. All BC classrooms have wall mounted speakers for audio.  IMPORTANT: ALL videos are required to be closed captioned for the hearing impaired. This service is provided by UM Accessible Technology Services and takes at least a week's advance notice to prepare. Email for assistance with closed captioning.
  • The BC has two overhead projectors (for transparencies), see Reception for check out.
  • For supplies such as dry erase markers and erasers, visit the supply cabinet located in the Reception Area outside of Patty Skinner's office (BC Operations).
  • If there are supplies or instructional equipment you need but we do not have on-site, contact Patty Skinner, BC Operations, to make procurement arrangements.
  • The Bitterroot College (BC) is located at 103 South 9th Street, Hamilton. For parking options, see BC Parking Map.  All parking at the BC is free of charge. 
  • BC business hours are 8am to 5pm, except on Federal and State holidays. The BC Learning and Testing Center is open for quiet study and computer access weeknights (Mon-Thurs, 5-8pm), except during fall and spring breaks.
  • The BC hires an evening front desk employee to monitor access in and out of the building until the last class ends. The employee is responsible for securing and locking the building upon closing.
  • BC faculty members are each provided with a mailbox located in the BC Copier/Mail Room; faculty members are encouraged to check their mailboxes frequently for internal announcements. IMPORTANT: in order to keep the contents of BC faculty mailboxes secure, no students are allowed in the BC Copier/Mail Room at any time.
  • BC faculty members may reserve the use of a BC Learning and Testing Center Study/Testing Room for office hours, student conferences, or student tutoring; contact the BC Learning and Testing Center Coordinator for scheduling.
  • Eating and drinking are permitted in the BC facility, although they are discouraged in carpeted areas. Please wipe up crumbs and spills, put trash in garbage cans, and generally keep the classroom tabletops, chairs, and floors clean. EXCEPTION: no food or beverages are allowed in BC Computer Lab or BC Science Lab at any time.
  • Smoking is prohibited in and around the BC facility at all times.

IMPORTANT: If a student is NOT on your CyberBear roster after the 15th day of instruction, contact Kathleen O'Leary, BC Advising & Enrollment Services, immediately.

  • Please submit an electronic copy of your course syllabus to Kathleen O'Leary, Bitterroot College (BC) Academic & Student Affairs Director, for BC syllabus records at the beginning of each term.   • To place a copy of your course text(s) on reserve at the BC Learning and Testing Center or at an area library, contact the BC Learning & Testing Center Coordinator.

  • CANCELING A CLASS: if you need to cancel a class during the semester due to personal circumstances, please follow through with ALL three of the actions below:
    • Action 1: Call the BC office at 406-375-0100 (always leave a message)
    • Action 2: Email BC Front Desk ( , BC Operations ( , and BC Advising ( 
    • Action 3: Email your students
      • Let them know class is canceled
      • Provide them with homework/make-up work instructions
  • The BC sets the final exam schedule as close to UM/Missoula College as possible but it is NOT the same. Contact Patty Skinner, BC Operations, with any special requests for scheduling your class final. The final exam schedule is usually posted a month before the end of the semester.
  • Visit the UM Registrar's Office for information on adding, overriding, and dropping students, changing grade options for students, the Early Alert Grading System, and final grading.
  • To understand and implement accommodation policies for students with disabilities, visit the UM Disability Services for Students (DSS) faculty website. The BC Disability Services for Students (DSS) Coordinator is Paul Kozlowitz; Paul can be contacted at or 243-7931. Students granted test modifications through DSS need to approach faculty with their DSS Eligibility for Test Modifications Letter and work with faculty on completing and submitting the test modification form to BC Learning & Testing Center Coordinator.   • For an understanding of UM discrimination and sexual harassment policies, visit the UM Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Office website. IMPORTANT: All UM employees are required to take the Discrimination Prevention Tutorial; login to your Moodle account via UM Login to take the tutorial.

  • Patty Skinner, BC Operations Manager, handles all Bitterroot College payroll. If you have a payroll question or issue, please contact Patty Skinner directly.
  • Bitterroot College faculty are paid on the first day of each month.  If the first day of the month falls on a Saturday, direct deposit occurs on Friday.  If the first day of the month falls on a Sunday, direct deposit occurs on Monday. For the monthly payroll schedule, visit UM Pay Schedules
  • For new faculty, the first wage payment is always sent to your mailing address via paper check (direct deposit does not start until the second wage payment).  If you do not receive this paper check in the mail within the first seven days of the month, contact Patty Skinner, BC Operations Manager, directly.

  • In the case of an armed intruder situation, follow procedures provided on armed intruder information sheet located in plastic container in classroom podiums. Faculty should review this procedure with their students the first week of classes.
  • In the case of any building emergency (i.e., plumbing, heating, electricity), contact Patty Skinner with BC Operations.
  • First aid kits are available at the BC reception desk and science laboratory. If a first aid kit item needs to be restocked, contact Patty Skinner, BC Operations.
  • If you are having concerns regarding your safety or the safety of your students while at the BC facility, notify Patty Skinner, BC Operations Manager, or Victoria Clark, BC Director, immediately. If you need information concerning acceptable parameters of student behavior, refer to the UM Student Conduct Code. If a student or any other individual at the BC facility is acting in a manner you are uncomfortable with, inform Patty Skinner, BC Operations Manager, or Victoria Clark, BC Director, immediately. The BC is committed to ensuring a safe and productive learning environment.

  • For Bitterroot College (BC) students needing textbooks, textbooks for all BC face-to-face classes are available for purchase at the BC the week prior to the start of the semester and the first two weeks of the semester (via an arrangement with the UM Bookstore).  For more information, visit BC Textbooks.
  • For BC students (and faculty) having IT issues (UM Login, CyberBear, UMConnect [student email], Moodle, Library), UM IT Central has asked that BC students (and faculty) identify themselves as such, so that problems may be resolved without IT requesting that BC students drive to Missoula.   • For BC students needing access to BC printers, copiers, or other office equipment have students ask for assistance at the BC reception desk.
  • The BC is open for quiet study (including computer access) every Monday through Thursday evening from 5pm until 8pm.
  • For BC students interested in tutoring, the BC offers tutoring free of charge in most subject areas. For BC tutoring days and times, visit BC Tutoring and Academic Help.   • For BC students needing to schedule a make-up exam, contact BC Testing & Learning Center Coordinator.
  • For BC students needing to add, drop, or change their grade option after the 15th day of instruction or who need registration or financial aid forms, refer students to Kathleen O'Leary (  BC Advising & Enrollment Services.  Information is also available via the UM Office of the Registrar.
  • For BC students needing academic advising, have students schedule an appointment with Kathleen O’Leary ( , BC Advising & Enrollment Services. With respect to student success, please let Kathleen O’Leary know right away if a student is having trouble academically – she is here to assist with student success and retention.
  • For information concerning acceptable parameters of student behavior and the process for handling student conduct issues (particularly academic misconduct issues such as plagiarism or cheating), refer to the UM Student Conduct Code.  For assistance with understanding/interpreting the UM Student Conduct Code, contact Kathleen O'Leary, ( , BC Advising & Enrollment Services.
