The Nature Of The West
In celebration ot Glacier National Park's 100th anniversary, Camas directed the focus of the Summer 2010 issue onto Glacier National Park, its people, its history, and its magnificent landscapes.
The Glacier Centennial Program's mission is "to celebrate the rich history of preservation, inspire personal connections and partnerships through the commemoration, and engage future park stewards." These ideals fall directly in line with the ways in which Camas seeks to remain respectfully rooted in the storied history of the American West, while moving forward towards the new ideas and perspectives that arise with successive generations of writers and artists.
The Park's glaciers themselves provided artists with an interesting opportunity to wonder at, propose, and question the landscape. As a result, we published a special issue regarding Glacier--and its glaciers--which encompasses the diversity of the park, in particular as found in the literary and artistic endeavors of local, regional, national, and international artists. We welcomed a broad range of submissions regarding glaciers, though we gave special attention to Glacier National Park. We have now published our issue and appreciate the effort and interest of all those artists and writers who submitted to this special issue. Please visit our subscriptions page to order your copy of the Glacier Centennial Issue of Camas.
Camas is extraordinarly grateful to Humanities Montana for their financial support of this special themed issue, as well as to Kass Hardy and the Glacier Centennial Program for their cooperation.
Throughout the year, people are finding as many different ways to celebrate Glacier's Centennial as there have been visitors to the Park. Below are links to some of these various celebrations. Get out there and have fun!
As part of this celebration, and to work within the literary community of Montana, Camas and the Whitefish Review are co-hosting a reading in Whitefish, MT on May 22. The event will feature writers and artists from both journals and will be held at the Crush Wine Bar in downtown Whitefish. The doors open at 7 p.m. and we would love to see you there! Kass Hardy has undertaken her own celebration of Glacier and exploration of the meaning found in wild places and writings. Her blog, kassandrahardy.wordpress.com details the 100 nights she'll be spending on the ground in and around Glacier National Park.
