What Can I Do With A Major In Photojournalism?

Introduction

Photojournalists tell stories with cameras. As with their reporter colleagues, they play a key role in our society. They help illustrate information that informs us about local, state, national and international events. Often they work alongside reporters, but they also do photo documentaries that give us an in-depth look at a person or issue. Some of the most memorable events in modern history have been captured by photojournalists.

Most employers prefer individuals with a degree in photojournalism but some hire graduates with other majors. They look for experience on newspapers or magazines and internships with news organizations. Some news organizations use extensive freelance photojournalism.

Employers report that practical experience is the most important part of education and training. Upon graduation many students have already gained much practical experience through part-time or summer jobs or through internships with news organizations. Most newspapers, magazines, and news organizations offer photo internships. Work on high school and college newspapers, or on community papers or U.S. Armed Forces publications also provides practical training.
