Library Media Endorsement - FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1)  Is the Library Media Endorsement program entirely online or are there face-to-face classes?
The program is available entirely online.

2)  How long does it take to complete the program?

There are nine courses in the program.  If you are working, The School of Education recommends that you take only one course during Fall Semester, one during Spring semester and take from one to three courses during the summer.  At this rate, it takes students about two years to complete the endorsement program.

3)  Would my status as a student be graduate or post-baccalaureate?

Depending on the level of degree you have already completed, courses can be taken at either the graduate or the post-baccalaureate level.  You do not have to take the courses at the graduate level for a Library Media endorsement in Montana.  However, if you need graduate credits to go up on a salary scale then you would want to take the courses for graduate credit.

4)  What is the deadline for application?
You will need to submit your application to the program 2 months prior to the semester you wish to begin.

5)  I don’t live in Montana.  Will the endorsement be valid in my state?
For an answer to this question, you should call the Office of Public Instruction or the equivalent accreditation office in your state or you may check the website: http://www.schoollibrarymedia.com/cert/index.html which lists certification requirements for all 50 states.

6)  What is the cost of the program?
Tuition is $160 per credit, plus a $48 per credit online learning fee.  The total is $208 per credit.  Fees are not guaranteed, however.  Changes in tuition and fees are not frequent, but they do happen.

7)  I have a question about the LME application form or the application process.
Contact Mike Schulz at UM-Western.  406-683-7492, or email: m_schulz@umwestern.edu or Anne Kish at UM-Western, 406-683-7494 or email a_kish@umwestern.edu.

8)  I have a question about admission to the program.
For admission at the undergraduate (post-baccalaureate) level, contact Lou Laasko in admissions at UM-Missoula at 406-243-4257 or email llaasko@mso.umt.edu.  For graduate admissions, contact the UM Graduate School at 406-243-2572 or email gradschl@mso.umt.edu.

9)  I’ve been admitted to the program.  How do I access my online class?

10)  When trying to register at UM-Missoula, I get a message that says I have a “health hold”.
Contact Curry Health Services on the UM-Missoula campus at 406-243-2122.  You’ll need to submit immunization records before you can register for classes through UM-Missoula.

11) When I submitted my application packet I sent immunization records.  Why is there a “health hold” on my record?
Courses in the LME program are provided by both UM-Missoula and UM-Western and immunization records are needed by both institutions.  You’ll need to send a copy of your immunization records to Curry Health Center at UM-Missoula as well.  You can find instructions and forms at Pre-Registration Immunization Requirements.

12) When trying to register at UM-Missoula, I get a message that says I need to “reapply” or that I am “inactive”.
If you have been taking classes through UM-Western, but have not registered for classes through UM-Missoula for more than two semesters, the system will have identified you as an “inactive student” and your registration may be blocked.  Contact Lou Laakso at 406-243-4257 or Enrollment Services at 406-243-6266 to reset your “start” date at UM-Missoula.
