Pharm. D. Curriculum

As the External Pharm. D. program is phased out, only the practical experience (clerkship) component remains available at the University of Montana.

Fall 2005
Begin Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (Clerkships)

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE)
The APPE may be completed in one of two ways: the modified APPE and the traditional entry-level APPE.

Modified APPE
The modified APPE is designed to be completed on a part-time basis in the pharmacist's practice site. Each 4-credit experience can be performed outside the school's established APPE sites under the direction of a faculty mentor. Patients, prescribers, and medical records must be available to the pharmacist in the site. Pharmacists will perform pharmaceutical care activities until competency is attained. It is anticipated that each APPE will take approximately 8 weeks to complete at the rate of 20 hours per week.

  • Drug information APPE (4 cr.)
  • Patient care APPE (4 cr.)
  • External Pharm. D. Pharmaceutical care project (3x4 cr.)
Three APPEs involving planning and development, implementation, maintenance,
and evaluation of a pharmaceutical care service in the practice site.
  • Elective APPEs (2x4 cr.)
Two APPEs involving special practice settings, special patient populations or specific disease states.

Traditional APPE
The traditional entry-level clerkship features 20-40 hour/week experiences in the school's established APPE sites.

  • Inpatient APPEs (2x4 cr.)
  • Ambulatory care APPEs (2x4 cr.)
  • Elective APPEs (3x4 cr.)
Three APPEs involving drug information, specialized services, geriatrics, specialty areas (nutrition, mental health, infectious disease, rehabilitation, pain control), administration, or research.
