About the Program:

From small local businesses to large national corporations, online marketing has become an integral part of communications strategy in the 21st century. Website design, search engine optimization, paid online advertising, social media, and web analytics are all a part of today's business marketing vocabulary, and this 20-week Online & Social Media Marketing Certificate Program is designed to break down these terms and to help you put them into action. Learn how to entice an online audience, convert them into paying customers, and analyze the effectiveness of your online marketing strategy. If you are new to online marketing, this full program is designed to take you from novice to expert in just five short courses. If you already have a foundation in online marketing, you can choose to take only the individual courses in this program that you need.  Our small class sizes also mean you'll receive one-on-one strategy help throughout the program.

The full Online & Social Media Marketing Certificate Program allows you ultimate learning flexibility. The program runs 20 weeks and consists of five 4-week courses. Students are welcome to take all courses, earning the full certificate and 6 CEUs, or pick and choose any of the individual courses. Students who register for the full program receive a discounted rate. Classes meet on Tuesday evenings from 5:30-8:30 PM in the Todd Building on the UM Campus and begin on January 7, 2014. Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of the program, students will have:

  • Identified the differences between inbound (online) marketing & outbound (traditional) marketing
  • Learned the essential attributes of successful websites from the perspective of users & search engines
  • Identified & selected the best keywords to get their websites found by searchers
  • Learned how to use social media networks, publicity, video, audio, and online ads to attract traffic
  • Identified appropriate monetization techniques to increase revenue from their online efforts
  • Developed quality content that establishes reputation & trust to stimulate patronage
  • Learned how to use email marketing to turn prospects into purchasers
  • Learned how to ensure that their online efforts are mobile-friendly


There are no prerequisites for this program; however, it will be helpful for participants to have a business or organization in mind to use as a "case study" throughout each course.

Course Materials:

All required materials will be provided in class or online.


Participants who successfully complete the full, 20-week program will receive a certificate awarding 6 CEUs (1.2 CEUs per individual course).

About the Instructor: Karen Porter

Karen Porter is a Missoula native with 25 years of marketing experience. She spent 10 years heading marketing functions for two multi-billion dollar companies, 11 years teaching marketing at The University of Montana, and has owned or co-owned several small businesses. Being involved in internet marketing since 1998, she brought her digital experience to the classroom in 2011 when she introduced the first university level online and social media marketing course in the state of Montana. She currently owns Impact Online Marketing offering digital marketing strategy, website development, search engine optimization, and social media services.
