Alumni
CEHS is proud and honored to announce news about our recent graduates.
In May, 2004, Jared Brown completed his Ph.D. in Toxicology, thereby also earning the distinction of being the first candidate to receive an advanced degree offered through this CEHS program since its introduction in 2002.
Jared began his graduate training at the Center for Environmental Health Sciences shortly after receiving his B.S. in Microbiology from Colorado State University. He quickly demonstrated his dedication to research and established solid working relationships with fellow students, staff scientists and faculty advisor Andrij Holian. He co-authored several publications in peer-reviewed journals and recently defended his dissertation titled, “Mechanisms of silica exacerbated systemic autoimmune disease." As of September, 2005, Jared is pursuing a post-doctoral position at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.
Jordan C. Schneider received a Master’s Degree in Microbiology this Spring working jointly with the UM Department of Biological Sciences and CEHS. JC began his graduate studies at UM under the mentorship of George Card and soon found that his research interests coalesced with the CEHS respiratory toxicology program. His work in the Holian laboratory led to the development of his thesis topic "Urban air particulate PM1648 and asthma exacerbation.”
This well-rounded, comprehensive approach is characteristic of JC’s academic and career path. As part of his unde
rgraduate experience at the University of California at Berkeley, JC worked in a research laboratory focusing on isolating and characterizing novel cancer proteins. He graduated in 1985 with a BA in molecular biology and a second major in economics. In between his academic studies, JC taught rockclimbing and guided adult and youth groups, including at risk youth. He also served as a helicopter mechanic in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Storm. JC plans to pursue his professional Pharm. D. in the UM School of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences.
