Frequently Asked Questions
Thank you for your interest in our program in Toxicology at the University of Montana. There are a few things that you should be aware of before you apply:
Q. Do I apply for an MS degree first, then apply for a PhD?
A. First, we neither require nor encourage students to apply for the MS degree who are interested in getting a PhD. It is a misconception that a MS is required before applying for a PhD. An MS degree is for those who would not plan on pursuing a higher degree. If you plan on going for a PhD then apply for the PhD.
Q. Do you pay graduate students?
A. All students who are accepted into our program will receive a stipend. The PhD stipend is $22,500 per year and the MS stipend is $14,400. The toxicology program pays tuition.
Q. Are international students accepted into toxicology?
A. For international students competition is very high and most likely only one foreign student will be accepted into our PhD program per year. Therefore, only exceptional students will be accepted. We are primarily interested in students with demonstrated experience in laboratory biomedical research and those interested in research being conducted by our faculty.
Q. Where do I apply?
A. Applications are made to the University Graduate School, not the Center for Environmental Health Sciences and not to individual faculty. Writing to individual faculty members does not help the applicant. More detailed information is available on our website (http://www.umt.edu/cehs/tox_phd_ms.html).
