          at the University of Montana

   



    The University of Montana offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Classics with an emphasis in Classical Civilization as well as a related Minor in Classical Civilization. Requirements for both are listed below. For more detailed descriptions of the courses, see the 2005-06 course catalog.


Requirements for the Major in Classics, Emphasis in Classical Civilization

a. Language Component (three or four semesters, depending):

either Latin U 101-102 and U 211 or equivalent
or Greek U 101-102 and U 211 or equivalent
or Latin U 101-102 and Greek U 101-102

b. Required courses:

MCLG U 155L Survey of Classical Greek and Roman Literature
MCLG U 160L Classical Mythology
MCLG U 251L or 252L The Epic or MCLG U 252L Tragedy

and twelve (12) credits selected from the following:

MCLG UG 301H History of Classical Greece
MCLG UG302H Ancient Greek Social History
MCLG UG 303H History of Classical Rome
MCLG U 320 Women in Antiquity
MCLG UG 360H Ancient Greek Civilization and Culture
MCLG UG 361H Roman and Early Christian Art in Context
MCLG UG 362H Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy
PHIL U 251H History of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy

Students are encouraged to distribute these credits among courses focusing on classical history, philosophy, art and literature.

d. Students are required to maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in all upper-division courses presented in fulfillment of requirements for the Classics/Classical Civilization major.

[The Upper-division Writing Expectation must be met by successfully completing MCLG 301H, 302H, 303H, 320, 362H or 365E with the consent of the instructor]

Requirements for the Minor in Classical Civilization
