   The University of Montana offers a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Classics with an emphasis in Classical Languages. Requirements are listed below. For more detailed descriptions of the courses, see the 2005-06 course catalog.

Requirements for the Major in Classics, Emphasis in Classical Languages

a. Language component:

Specification in Latin: twelve (12) credits in Latin beyond Latin 102, plus six (6) credits in Greek beyond Greek 102.

Specification in Greek: twelve (12) credits in Greek beyond Greek 102, plus six (6) credits in Latin beyond Latin 102.

b. Required courses :

MCLG 155L Survey of Classical Greek and Roman Literature
MCLG U 160L Classical Mythology
Either MCLG 251L The Epic or MCLG 252L Tragedy

c. Twelve (12) credits from

MCLG UG 301 H Classical Greece
MCLG UG 302H Ancient Greek Social History
MCLG UG 303 H Classical Rome
MCLG U 309/319 City as text/UM Students in Rome
MCLG U 320 Women in Antiquity
MCLG U 360H Ancient Greek Civilization and Culture
MCLG U 361L Roman and Early Christian Art in Context
MCLG U 362H Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy
PHIL U 251H History of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy


Students are encouraged to distribute these credits among courses focusing on classical history, philosophy, art and literature.

d. Students are required to maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in all upper-division courses presented in fulfillment of requirements for the Classics/Classical Languages major.

[The Upper-division Writing Expectation must be met by successfully completing MCLG 301H, 302H, 303H, 320, 362H or 365E with the consent of the instructor.]
