The mission of the Native American Center of Excellence at the University of Montana School of Pharmacy and Allied Health is to facilitate the identification, recruitment, retention, and professional development of American Indian/Alaska Native students who are interested in pursuing careers in health care delivery or research. The COE offers a wide variety of activities and programs that contribute to the students' overall academic performance and development.

NACOE is funded by the Health Services and Resources Administration and is dedicated to increasing the number of American Indian faculty members in schools of pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences.

The COE logo incorporates many symbols of Native culture. The circular shape of the logo represents the cycle of life. The turtle represents Mother Earth and emphasizes the interconnectedness of all life forms. Bears are believed to have strong medicinal powers which can be conferred upon those who dream of the animal. The final component of the logo, the bear's life line, represents its life force, both it's physical and spiritual essence. It is the hope of COE that its students can draw on these symbols to find the strength, wisdom and skill to care for people.
