The Montana Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission and The University of Montana-Missoula invite you to attend a national conference designed to examine new perspectives about Lewis and Clark. The entire length of the Corps of Discovery’s journey was Indian Country. On many occasions, Lewis and Clark’s survival and success depended on Indian people and the cultural lessons shared. Any complete commemoration of the bicentennial must prominently feature the perspectives of both the people native to the North American continent and President Jefferson’s explorers.

We invited both Indian and non-Indian scholars to research some aspect of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and its impact on the tribes at that time, or to research the changes that have occurred in tribal culture and lifestyle in the 200 years since that event. The response to that invitation was overwhelming and the conference will feature almost 80 research presentations. In addition, we invited two keynote speakers and 10 featured speakers to address specific topics we think will interest those who attend. We hope this conference will spark a dynamic exchange of new thought on how American Indians and Euro-Americans view (and viewed) the expedition and how the coming together of cultures has changed the environment, cultural traditions and lifestyles, and the nation itself.

But this is not solely an academic conference. We have invited over 160 performers to share their music, dance, storytelling and theatrical performances as a cultural celebration. These artistic presentations, performed in two evening concerts during the conference, will help us all consider and more fully appreciate the unique riches of the different cultures associated with the Lewis and Clark story.

Humor will help us to maintain our perspective and remember to laugh at ourselves and our seriousness. Nationally known comedian Charlie Hill will have us falling out of our seats on Wednesday evening, May 28. Charlie was the lead writer for the Roseanne show, has appeared six times on the Tonight Show as well as the Jay Leno Show and was twice named National Indian Entertainer of the Year. Admission is free with your conference registration.

You won't want to miss the Finale Banquet either. We'll not only serve up a delicious meal, but you'll also be served some of the best entertainment Montana has to offer. Rob Quist and Jack Gladstone (Blackfeet) together with their band comprise Western Odyssey. With song, humor, and multi-media show you will be entertained in true Montana fashion.

Whether you are a Lewis and Clark enthusiast or critic, or someone who wants to learn more about your heritage, we invite you to attend this national conference scheduled for May 28-30, 2003 at The University of Montana in Missoula, Montana.
