Additional Sustainability Initiatives

Food Zoo To-Go Program

TO-GO Container

Our Food Zoo To-Go program features a reusable, recyclable take-out container. It’s economical and good for the environment. Guests can purchase a container at the entrance to the Food Zoo for a one-time fee of $5. Bring your dirty container back to the Food Zoo and exchange it for a clean one whenever you want. The Food Zoo To-Go program has diverted over 18,102 styrofoam to-go containers during the 2013-2014 school year alone.

Cooking Oil Recycling

Recycled Cooking Oil

UMD uses locally sourced safflower oil in our fryers and other cooking applications. The used oil is then returned to the same farm it came from and is recycled into biodiesel.

Compostable To-Go Containers

Compostable To-Go Containers in Retail Dining Operations

UMD uses compostable containers in all of our retail locations. We also offer a reusable bag at the Corner Store, the student grocery and food store.

Green Cleaning Chemicals

Green Cleaning

UMD switched to ecologically sensitive cleaning supplies in 2009, and since, all cleaning products in UMD have been either Green Seal or Designed for the Environment certified.
