The mission of the English Language Institute (ELI) is to serve international students with limited English proficiency who wish to improve their English language and academic skills in order to pursue studies at The University of Montana (UM) or another institution of higher education. The ELI also welcomes any non-native speaker of English.

Students benefit from a range of interactive courses that focus on grammar, reading, writing, speaking and listening. They also have opportunities to participate in ELI social activities.

ELI students have access to all of the academic and recreational facilities at UM. In addition, they experience the friendly people and beauty of Montana, as well as the social and cultural events on campus and in Missoula.

ELI students can enter UM in one of two ways. They can:

• show their academic readiness through their success in the ELI or
• meet UM's English language proficiency score requirement.
