Director, English Language Institute - Jana Hood

Jana Hood has taught at the university, high school and middle school levels in the United States, Japan, Russia, Finland, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.  She has two advanced degrees in TESOL from Columbia University Teachers College in New York. She has been a Fulbright lecturer two times, a Soros Teaching Fellow, Summer Teacher Trainer for the Soros Open Society program, visiting instructor in the Harvard University Summer ESL program and an English Language Specialist for the United States Information Service.  Jana has conducted teacher-training workshops, participated in special teacher-training institutes and taught graduate and undergraduate classes to primary- and secondary-school teacher trainees in methodology and curriculum and materials development.  Presently, she directs and oversees the English Language Institute, but she has also worked as an instructor and a consultant for English Language Programs and International Programs since 2004.

Assistant Director - Robert Squires

As Assistant Director of ELI, Robert Squires oversees short-term language programs.  He is responsible for developing curricula, computer learning resources and promoting language programs at the Institute. Robert has been teaching ESL/EFL since 1997.  He has taught in Japan, Bolivia, Korea and the U.K. and since 2004 he has worked at the ELI. He holds an MA from the University of Aberdeen and an MEd. in TESOL from the University of Edinburgh. In addition to his administrative duties, Robert teaches in the ELI; his interests and expertise are in classroom and online teaching and teacher training. He has presented workshops nationally and regionally on the use of technology in the classroom.

Assistant Director for Financial Affairs and Budgeting- Nancy Gass

Nancy Gass is ELI's office manager. She provides information and assistance regarding issuance of I-20 forms, payment of tuition and fees, and related matters.

Assistant to the Director of International Programs - Jeanne Loftus

In addition to providing key administrative support, Jeanne is responsible for corresponding with prospective students, processing ELI applications and immigration documents, and assisting newly arrived ELI students with orientation to the UM campus.
