Outreach Program - Science is Cool

Read this section if you wish to submit a proposal for a SBIR Phase 0 award from the State of Montana.

To help develop the economic S&T base in Montana, the Montana NSF EPSCoR has developed a partnership with the State to help fund SBIR Phase 0 awards (up to $5,000 each) aimed to promote and encourage SBIR Phase 1 award applications. The SBIR Program Manager, Montana Department of Commerce, will head this program for the State of Montana (UM technology transfer director will assist with the competitions). These awards show a high correlation with Phase 1 success.

  • Details of the SBIR Phase 0 Award Program and competition announcements are available through the State of Montana’s Department of Commerce SBIR Office.
  • A Phase 1 SBIR proposal to NSF or other federal agencies will be expected within eighteen months of a SBIR Phase 0 grant unless otherwise approved by the state’s SBIR Office and the UM NSF EPSCoR Office.
  • Awardees must submit financial and program progress reports yearly or upon request.
  • A final report with photos of awardee, company and work being done, is required upon completion of the award period.
  • Proposal questions and further information may be obtained from one of the following sources:
