Outreach Program - Science is Cool

Read this section if you wish to apply for Montana NSF EPSCoR funding of a seminar speaker.

The Seminar Speaker Program allows costs for travel and lodging up to a maximum of $750 per speaker for a three-day stay or $500 for a two-day stay. This program seeks to bring research faculty and educators to Montana and has led to the hiring of some of the more talented faculty by The University of Montana. Collaborations, professional relationships and mentoring continue to be fostered and enhanced by this extremely successful program.

  • Departments, divisions and individual faculty are encouraged to apply to the Seminar Speaker Program.
  • Invited speakers need not have specialization in the focus areas of biomolecular structure and dynamics or structural and functional neuroscience, but justification for the visit is required.
  • Funding for this program will be distributed throughout the science departments or to a department that has a scientific connection.
  • Departments may apply for a maximum of up to 2-3 speakers per department per semester or as funding allows.
  • Funds may not be used for entertainment, alcoholic beverages, or that which violates NSF, state or institutional policy.
  • Travel arrangements for speakers must be conducted in consultation with the UM NSF EPSCoR Office and the UM certified travel associate in requesting department. All airline tickets must be purchased using a UM ProCard.
  • Travel must be arranged and filed with the NSF EPSCoR Office 30 days in advance and must be the lowest market prices.
  • The department’s seminar speaker schedule should include at least one faculty member from outside the host department.
  • Complete the NSF EPSCoR Seminar Speaker Program Application. (See Applications)

Speakers Coming to Campus

  • This original form will be returned to the requestor’s departmental office with the Director’s approval. If denied, see Director’s comments attached.
  • Honorariums have a maximum dollar amount of $200.00. Exceptions may occur. Contact the UM NSF EPSCoR Office for further information.
  • Following the visit, resubmit original application form with actual reimbursable expenditures (entire amount). Actual expenditures may not exceed amounts requested unless re-approved.
  • Include a completed UM Guest Speaker Participant form with original receipts for all expenses, to include all ProCard charges.
  • NSF EPSCoR will complete forms, submit to Business Services and send department completed copies.
  • No seminar speaker’s application will be honored 45 days after speaker’s visit.

Non-compliance, failure to respond or providing insufficient or false responses within 30 days of project completion, may result in suspension of all future UM NSF EPSCoR funding for the awardee and host department or center.

NOTE: We are not allowed to pay airfare to the United States for international speakers. Call the NSF EPSCoR Office for further information.
