About the Center for Ethics |

|
The Center for Ethics is charged with conducting responsible moral discourse concerning both societal ethics (e.g., the values that inform health, economic growth, education, and conservation policies) and the ethical practices of a wide range of professionals (e.g., public administrators, business managers, health workers, teachers). The Center's functions include ethics inquiry and education (to be achieved through courses, public lectures and conferences, professional development workshops, and a resource center) and funded research. Ethics has developed into a recognized field of study over the past twenty years, with a variety of applications. Courses in ethics are taught across the post-secondary curriculum in areas as diverse as agriculture, environment, literature, journalism, pharmacy and public administration. There is increasing interest in teaching ethics in K-12 classrooms, often carrying the label of character education at the lower levels with secondary school ethics curricula mirroring those offered in post-secondary classrooms. In addition, new career possibilities for ethics officers -- those who coordinate compliance efforts and offer ethics training and oversight -- abound in medical centers, corporations, industry and governmental agencies. Yet, few of those working in this area or who hope to work in the field of ethics, have a combination of philosophical and pedagogical background necessary for them to carry out their work effectively. The Center for Ethics endeavors to rectify this discrepancy.
