BUILDING ENERGY USAGE

UNIVERSITY CENTER

The University Center (UC) is located on UM's mountain campus. The UC was built in 1968 and is the largest building on main campus in terms of gross square footage. As the central campus hub, it experiences a large amount of traffic and energy usage and costs are among the highest.

UC Director Liz Roosa Millar understands the dynamics of this building and is taking steps to more effectively manage its usage and costs.  Liz recently invested $1.6 million in energy conversation projects. These measures will reduce the UC’s overall energy ranking to 6 and save $70,000 per year. Not only will this project save costs, but it will also help UM achieve its climate goals by mitigating 88,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.  While other campus departments are dealing with budget deficits by curtailing spending, Liz has boldly stepped up and made smart investments in energy conservation.
