GROUNDS

The University of Montana grounds staff manages over 50 acres of landscape, including over 2 million square feet of turf. The staff was recognized for their excellent work when they won the National Grand Award from the Professional Grounds Management Society in 1994 and again in 2002 when they received an honorable mention award.

In order to help maintain the lawn and the overall beauty of the campus, please use the sidewalks whenever possible.

UM Campus

The University Grounds Management Staff adheres to an Integrated Pest Management System (IPM). This system utilizes methods that are the least invasive to the surrounding environment, when possible, to control pests. It includes the use of natural controls, maintaining good plant health, the use of plant varieties that are resistant to problem pests and the use of chemicals only when absolutely necessary to prevent irreparable damage to plants in the landscape.

SPRAYING

Spring/Summer weed control applications will begin the week of April 29th, 2013. Weed control applications will first take place in ornamental planting/mulch beds, sidewalk cracks, parking lots, and gravel areas. Weed control applications conducted in the aforementioned areas will take place during the 3 weeks prior to 2013 Commencement. After graduation, staff will begin broadleaf weed control applications within turf areas. All weed control applications to be conducted in lawn areas will be posted with visible signage no less than 48 hours prior to application, and signage will remain in place for a minimum of 48 hours after treatment has been completed. Staff undertaking all applications are Montana Department of Agriculture Certified Applicators, and they will be operating in compliance with all regulations pertaining to the product being utilized.

Areas to be treated will be done so chronologically with relation to their priority (e.g. Zone 1 will be completed prior to beginning Zone 2). All control applications will take place during the morning hours, and daily completion will generally take place prior to 10am. Please contact the Grounds Maintenance Department at 243-2183 with questions regarding these applications.
